FAQs
-
Scalp micropigmentation is a non-surgical cosmetic tattoo that replicates the appearance of hair follicles using tiny, layered dots. It gives the look of a shaved head, fuller head of hair, or camouflaged hair loss depending on the client’s needs.
SMP used a specialized tattoo machine, specialized needles only for SMP, and the best organic + vegan inks safe for the scalp. The micro needles are used to implant tiny dots of pigment into the scalp. Usually this takes about 2 - 3 sessions for the desired result but you get instant results even after the first session.
-
SMP is considered semi-permanent but with touch ups and proper maintenance, it can give the appearance of permanent results lasting for 5 - 7 years before a touch up is recommended.
-
Absolutely! Both, men and women are candidates for SMP.
SMP is the best option if you have thinning or widening parts, female pattern hair loss, postpartum hair loss, alopecia, or scarring.
Women usually don’t want a shaved head look so the technique is adjusted to blending pigment between existing hairs, matching the natural hair color, and focuses on subtle density enhancement.
-
SMP pigments are deposited shallower in the skin than traditional tattoos. SMP uses organic + vegan inks which the body gradually breaks down and absorbs pigment over time. Many factors can affect fading such as sun exposure, skin type, immune response, and aftercare.
-
The pain differs from client to client but most say the pain is 3/10. It is more of an annoying feeling than painful.
-
No side effects. On the first day, the client can expect redness like a mild sunburn, which is from handling the scalp for a few hours. The redness will go away no later than the next day.
-
SMP is a specialized form of cosmetic tattooing that takes precision, time and skill. It’s a highly detailed process that requires an experienced artist to achieve realistic results.
SMP is often to most cost effective long-term option with instant results. Hair transplants may require multiple surgeries which are extremely expensive per session (around $20,000), long healing times, and not guaranteed results. Some people take medication for life for results, use hair fibers, or wear hair pieces that end up costing more over time and need regular maintenance.
-
The price is based on the amount of hair loss. More hair loss requires more time from the technician. Compared to hair transplants, clients find SMP much more affordable.
Some treatments are priced per session if the client only requires density fills. Most women only require density enhancements.

Over the 5-7 years, the pigment will naturally fade matching any grayness that occurs in that time. The technician may also adjust the color as needed during a touch up. The pigment has hues of gray, so no need to worry if your hair starts to turn gray.
